A cascade system is a connected series of tanks organized within a micro-catchment of the dry zone in Sri Lanka. The tanks are used to store water from a seasonal stream. The stored water is conveyed to other tanks downstream and used for a variety of purposes. Irrigation tanks are often not isolated tanks but are part of a larger interconnected system of tanks called a ‘tank cascade system’. It has connected with series of tanks organized within a micro-catchments.   A ‘cascade system’ is the traditional unit used in the management of tanks. From ancient times it is referred to as ‘Ellangawa’. The term is made up of the Sinhalese words ‘ ellan ’, meaning hanging and ‘ gawa ’, meaning one after the other. උකුවෙලගේ රළු-අං කටුස්සා (Ukuwela's Rough-horn Lizard) / Ceratophora ukuwelai

වසර 22 කට පසු ශ්‍රී ලංකාවෙන් නව අං-කටුසු විශේෂයක් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට ආවේණික කටුසු ගණයක් වන Ceratophora හි විශේෂ 5 ක් මේ වන විට හඳුනාගෙන ඇත.මින් Ceratophora stoddartii පළමුවෙන්ම විස්තර කරන ලද්දේ ග්‍රේ විසින් 1834 වසරේදීය. පසුව Ceratophora tennentii, Ceratophora aspera විස්තර කරනු ලැබූ අතර අවසන් වරට විස්තර කරන ලද්දේ රක්වාන කඳුවැටිය ආශ්‍රිතව ව්‍යාප්තව සිටින Ceratophora erdeleni හා Ceratophora karu යන විශේෂ දෙකයි. ඒ 1998 වසරේදී කැළුම් මනමේන්ද්‍ර-ආරච්චි හා රොහාන් පෙතියාගොඩ විසිනි. Ceratophora aspera ( රළු අං කටුස්සා) ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ වැඩිම භූගෝලීය ව්‍යාප්තිය දක්වන විශේෂ ලෙස හඳුන්වනු ලබයි. එම විශේෂයේ කෞතුකාගාර නිදර්ශක හා පහතරට තෙත් කළාපයේ ඇතැම් ප්‍රදේශ වලින් හමුවන සතුන්ගේ ලක්ෂණ වල වෙනසක් ඇති බව ක්ෂේස්ත්‍ර ජීව විද්‍යාඥ සමීර සුරංජන් කරුණාරත්න ඇතුළු පර්යේෂක කණ්ඩායමට දැකගැනීමට හැකි වී ඇත. ඒ ඔස්සේ සිදුකරන ලද රූපවිද්‍යාත්මක හා ජානමය පර්යේෂණ මගින් කෑගල්ල දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ සල්ගල වනයේ සිටින ගහණය නව විශේෂයක් ලෙස හඳුනාගැනීමට හැකිව තිබේ. මෙම නව විශේෂය රජරට විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයේ ආචාර්ය , පරිණාමික ජීවවිද්‍යාඥ හා ...

           1638 පෘතුගීසීන්ට විරුද්ධව පැන නැගී ගන්නෝරුව සටන සිදු වූ භූමිය , ඓතිහාසික වටිනාකමකින් යුතු වුවා සේම ජෛව විවිධත්වයෙන් අනූන වූ ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ මධ්‍යම පළාතේ කඳුකරයට තවත් ආලෝකයක් එක් කළ වැදගත් පාරිසරික පද්ධතියක් ලෙස ගන්නෝරුව වන රක්ෂිතය හඳුන්වා දිය හැක .  උඩවත්ත කැලය , හන්තාන කඳු පන්තිය , වාකරවත්ත හා බහිරවකන්ද කඳු වනාන්තර හා ඒකාබද්ධ වූ ගන්නෝරුව වන රක්ෂිතය පේරාදෙණිය උද්භිත උද්‍යානයට සමීපව පිහිටා ඇත .  මෙම වනාන්තරය තෙත් කලාපීය කුරුලු විශේෂ අධ්‍යයනයට සුවිශේෂී වූ ස්ථානයකි . එම නිසාම මෙම ස්ථානය කඳුකර කුරුලු ගහන කලාපයක් ලෙස 1995 ජෛව විවිධත්ව ආඥා පනත යටතේ වර්ගකරණයට කර ඇත . මෙම කඳුකර වැසි වනාන්තරය මහනුවර නගරයේ සිට ආසන්නව 6.5 km ක් නිරිත දෙසට වන්නට හෙක්ටයාර 267 ක භූමි ප්‍රදේශයක් පුරා පැතිරී පවතින අතර එයින් අඩකට වැඩි ප්‍රමාණයක් මහෝගනී ශාක විශේෂයෙන් සමන්විත වීම වැදගත් කරුණකි . මුහුදු මට්ටමේ සිට 600 m ත් - 750m ත් අතර උසකින් පිහිටා ඇති මෙය තරමක් ගල් සහිත ප්‍රදේශයකි . එමෙන්ම මහනුවර මහවැලි ඉහළ කලාපයට අයත් මෙම රක්ෂිත පෙදෙසට වාර...
